~ So, this was a bit naughty. I picked up a linen dress by Assembly Label and, following my impulse to turn it into a pinafore, I channelled my teenage self and slashed off the cap sleeves. I’ve left the arm openings raw but sewn a length of my favourite ribbon around each of the insides to prevent ongoing fraying. It will get more ruffled looking over time. Exisiting tiny belt loops at each side seam now correspond to rows of buttons across the back. The difference between the teenager and me now is that I knew the result would be ‘imperfect’ and that the slashed fabric would gape under the arms. This is addressed by the buttoning but it’s not exactly a perfectly tailored garment, more like an ad hoc sheath. With pockets. The buttons on the front are decorative. To me - they are like a memo, which says ‘this is a not serious garment’. But if you think I’ve gone a step too far, I’m willing to snip them off for you. The size is fairly flexible, if you are a wearer of ad hoc sheaths or open to becoming one. I like the idea that it goes on over anything and everything.
